This story is close to our hearts, as the father works at a NICU and has nursed many MBF babies back to health over the years. A few days after his wife gave birth via c-section, she began experiencing redness, pain and tenderness in one of her legs. Due to this alarming development, she had to immediately be transferred to AKU to be treated for deep vein thrombosis. This is a life-threatening medical condition in which a clot forms in a deep vein, and is at risk of breaking off and causing a blockage in the lung, called pulmonary embolism.
The family had not financially planned for this emergency, but thankfully, we were able to step in and ensure she received lifesaving treatment. She is now out of the woods and at home recovering with her precious newborn. Not everyone is as lucky: C-sections almost double a woman’s risk of a dangerous blood clot and pulmonary embolisms account for almost 10% of maternal deaths.
Timely intervention can help bring this number down.
