We met Asma Badr at Kharadar General Hospital, home of our Baba Island program, where she had just delivered her second baby via c-section. Her story is one of hardship and sadly, not one that is uncommon amongst the women of the island.
Asma got married at the extremely young age of 17 and had a baby boy who is now 5 years old; however, that marriage ended in divorce because her ex-husband was unemployed and an addict. When she remarried a year ago, she made the difficult choice to leave her first child with her mother so that he could benefit from living in the city. Life on the island is challenging under normal circumstances, but particularly so during a pregnancy. Asma had no one around to help her, so she would have to walk a significant distance to fetch drinking water and carry it back- just one example of the daily hardships she faced.
Through our program at Baba Island, we hope to make the lives of such mamas a bit easier by ensuring they have access to safe and quality care.
